Perry is the child of Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry (actor). Her first television appearances were Jackie Harris on ABC's sitcom Roseanne. Her mother portrayed the role. Fearing stress, her parents did not want to see performing before she turned 18. Perry was a shy teenager and did not act. Her first acting experience was in the year 2000 at Northwestern University to gain friends after she was transferred from Boston University. Perry made her debut in New York after graduation, landing minor roles in Law & Order: Criminal Intent. But homesickness made Perry return to California and find work as a stage actress. She performed on Broadway in The Other Place with her mother in the year 2013. The show featured her father Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in the year 2015 at The Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry was in nine episodes of The Family, an ABC drama The Family in 2016. In 2017, Perry starred in the role of a political thriller Scandal along with her father. The same year her character was cast a young model of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again portraying a younger character of her mom's role. The actress was chosen for the role despite having a close relationship with the character's family.
